Eco & Community Focus
Eco
Netfone’s small contribution to the environment is to try to reduce the unneeded use of electrical power. In New Zealand we generate a high percentage of electrical power from Hydro and Wind sources, and these produce minimal carbon emissions.
However, the Huntly power station is powered by coal and coal is bad from a global warming perspective. Huntly supplies around 17% of New Zealands power and in return generates around 50% of all C02 gases in New Zealand. 50% of the coal Huntley uses comes from Indonesia - creating even more carbon emissions as it is transported around the world.
So anything Netfone does to reduce power use, will reduce carbon emissions.
The Netfone servers produce significant amounts of heat, which we normally pump outside. During winter, as a conservation measure we recycle the heat and use it to warm the office areas.
As a further power saving measure, we use automated light switching systems, and make use of natural light to further reduce power consumption. Paper and Cardboard is recycled, rather than dumped.
In a small way, these measures reduce our carbon production.
Community Support
At Netfone, we believe we should help local community organisations and currently we assist two local community organisations with free Netfone services:
Streetvan – www.pnsv.org.nz - Lew Findlay provides a fantastic service to the under-privileged and needy within our community and we are pleased to support this effort.
“Palmerston North Street Van wishes to thank Netfone for their sponsorship and amazing VOIP telephone system. We also would like to thank the staff of Netfone for their support and willingness to help. Once again thank you so much.” – Lew Findlay - 06 356 3337.
We also support Sustainable Manawatu - http://www.sustainablemanawatu.org.nz – They provide information and advice on eco resources.
